Icelandic airline Icelandair has published an analysis of European cities with a special winter atmosphere, in which Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut region came out on top and Austria is represented by a total of three cities.
When the first frost sweeps across the land and the scent of mulled wine wafts through the streets, many people start looking for the ideal winter travel destination. Interest in this has risen significantly in Germany recently: 13,000 Google searches for the term “winter trip” last month represent an increase of 45 percent compared to October.
In line with this, the Icelandic airline Icelandair has published an analysis. European cities that offer a particularly atmospheric winter atmosphere were examined. Among other things, average snowfall, light pollution, number of clear nights, and the popularity of local Christmas markets were evaluated.
Austria represented three times
Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut region of Upper Austria emerged as the clear winner. The picturesque lakeside village averages 890 millimeters of snowfall per winter and offers ideal conditions for stargazing with its low light pollution. Salzburg, known for its baroque old town and musical history, took second place, also due to its Christmas markets and high probability of clear nights. The city of Sibiu in Romania took the last place on the podium.
Lucerne in Switzerland shares fourth place with Vienna. The city on Lake Lucerne scores with a snow probability of just under 79 millimeters and scenic backdrop. The Austrian capital also impresses with its high popularity on social media around its Christmas markets (26,900 Instagram posts) and a clear winter sky.
Munich is the only German destination in the top 10
The only German city in the ranking is Munich in tenth place. According to the analysis, the Bavarian capital scores with up to 39 percent clear nights in winter, an established Christmas market tradition, and an urban winter atmosphere.
Bern (8th place) was also included in the list. With an average of 58 millimeters of snowfall and 43 percent cloudless nights, the Swiss capital offers good conditions for a wonderful winter experience.
Where snow is guaranteed
In addition to the general rating, Icelandair has also created its own ranking of places where snow is almost guaranteed. Alongside Hallstatt, these include Reykjavík (254 mm), Rovaniemi in Finland (193 mm), Tallinn (134 mm), and Vilnius (104 mm). Perfect for anyone who considers snow essential for a successful winter vacation.
